About Us

HISTORY

The Great Neck Soccer Club is a competitive not-for-profit program founded in 2000 to help provide boys and girls from all backgrounds and abilities the opportunity to enhance their soccer development through a Great Neck based Travel Soccer Program.  We have grown into a Club supporting more than 500 Intramural and Travel Team players.

As founding members of the Soccer Advisory Committee of North Hempstead (alongside Albertson, Manhasset, New Hyde Park and Port Washington) we are well connected in the Long Island Soccer Community.

We offer development through either an 8 week Intramural Program in the Fall, Winter and Spring as well as through our Travel Program, which runs in the Fall, Winter and Spring.

TRAVEL PROGRAM

Our 24 boys and girls Travel teams compete in LIJSL and NYCSL, which are the prevalent leagues in our area.  We have multiple teams playing in the top Divisions in those leagues along with mid level and lower level teams, which creates the opportunities for kids at all levels to develop and compete.

Our Travel Teams train 2x per week (with an optional 3rd session on Fridays for extra skill development) under the supervision of dedicated Professional Trainers who have played at the collegiate and professional levels and have years of experience training at Clubs across Long Island. To ensure the best possible environment for development, we do a lot of quality checks along the way to ensure that our staff are a good fit for their teams ie they connect well with the kids and focus on foundational skill development.

INTRAMURAL PROGRAM

Our Intramural Program runs in the Fall, Winter and Spring with Players separated by grade.  Players train 1x per week (in developmentally appropriate environments), under the purview of our Professional Training Staff.  We also offer optional 1x per week skill development training, and can provide/recommend private training options as needed.  Our underlying goal is to help these players build the skills and confidence they need to progress into our Travel Soccer Program.  Our Intramural Program is overseen by both paid professional and volunteer members of the community including:

  • Shep Messing (Intrmaural Program Director) - Shep is a Great Neck resident who has accomplished just about everything there is to accomplish in the world of soccer  i.e. he is a Harvard All American, played on the Olympic Team, the US National Team and the Cosmos with Pele, etc.).  Shep is passionate about the development of youth soccer players on Long Island, and personally oversees our program to ensure that it meets his standards.
  • Mike Mordocco (Director of Coaching) - Mike played on the UCONN Men's National Championship team, and is currently the Head Coach for the D1 LIU Post Men's team.  Mike is involved in all facets of the Club's Soccer Development Program and oversees the training to ensuring that our staff are properly aligned to our goals as a Club.
  • Gerneil "Jigs" Lorne (Founder, Jigs Soccer Academy) - Jigs has been with the Club since it was founded, and has played an instrumental role in the development of soccer programs at East Meadow, Elmont, Port Washington and others.  Jigs and his staff are directly responsible for the training and oversight of all activities on the day of our training sessions.
